Is Apple Creating a Newsstand for the iPad

April 2, 2011

With the arrival of the iPad earlier this year, many saw in it the beginning of the end of old fashion periodical paper publications, or at least the beginning of a new communication media era.

It’s been lately reported that Apple Inc. would be in the process of creating a digital newsstand so that it can channelize a large amount of digital newspapers and magazines, especially for it’s iPad customers.

We lately saw a growing number of publications available on the iPad, like the New York Times, Wired Magazine,  Popular Mechanics or GQ Magazine.  But until now, everyone had their own ways of administrating the subscriptions and more importantly their own digital publication format.

What Apple would be working on is something similar to the iBook store, in a goal to centralize most if not all periodical publications in it.  By doing so, it aims at increasing the iPad sales while helping publishers sell more subscriptions than single issues.

So far, the only thing reportedly still holding the newsstand from hitting the AppStore is the negotiations about who of Apple or the publishers will be managing the subscriptions data and how revenues are going to be shared.  Obviously the publishers want to have a noticeable data access about who their customers are and their consuming patterns.

If everything goes well, we could expect the Newsstand to be introduced in the next couple of months, or maybe early in 2011 with – maybe – the arrival of the next version of the iPad.

Tips To Open An Independent Bookstore

March 27, 2011
By

If you would you like to open an independent bookstore, you should know that about half of all new bookshop businesses don’t make it. Whether because of poor planning, or being  unprepared to deal with the challenges that go along with book selling, many new bookstores close their doors within 5 years. However, about half DO succeed. What does it take to be one of them?

YOU can successfully open an independent bookstore if you follow these 3 great tips to help you start out on the right foot:

1.  Recognize that a bookstore business is a retail business, and retail is hard work. You may love to read, but as a bookshop owner you may have less time to read than ever before! Along with choosing a location, setting up shop, and stocking freshly printed books, you’ll need to become familiar with every aspect of retail, from scheduling employees and handling payroll to understanding income and sales tax laws.

Also, don’t underestimate how physically tiring retail work can be – more than likely you’ll be on your feet all day, lifting, carrying, sorting, and serving your customers with a smile in spite of simply wanting to curl up with a good book!

2. Be prepared to wait for your first pay check. Financial success in this sector does not come overnight. Most new businesses average around 3 years to turn a profit. Even if you do most of the work yourself, you may find there is little left after meeting your monthly obligations to pay yourself for quite some time. You’ll want to make sure that you have the resources to proceed before cutting the cord to your current stream of income.

3. Do take advantage of the insightful resources available for those wanting to open an independent bookstore early in your planning. There are many involved in the book selling business who are pulling for you – authors, publishers, printers, distributors, consultants and more all need for you to succeed in order to succeed themselves! Although they may be very busy people, most would be willing to give you a few minutes of their time; you can learn a lot from such conversations.

Organizations such as the American Booksellers Association are also a great source of information as you investigate what it really takes to open an independent  bookstore. With forethought and a realistic assessment of this industry, you can open a bookshop and succeed!

Indy Bookstores and why we love ‘em. By Alexandra Bezdikian

Question by Mirea: Where can I find some independent bookstores up around Oceanside and San Clemente that are not used bookstores?
I am around that area at the moment and I have a project that requires I find some independent book stores in that general area. All I keep coming across is the used bookstores and the large chain stores. Any ideas?
